If I had to describe in two words what my feeling for the Wii-U are, it would be skeptical optimism. So without further ado, let’s skip the foreplay and let’s dive right into the review.
Let’s start of with the most important part of any video game console…the games. For the most part, Nintendo has inconsistently delivered. Since the beginning of January we have had various droughts during the year. Between January and March we were promised Rayman Legends and Aliens: Colonial Marines. One of those was delayed and the other one was cancelled. After Monster Hunter, there was another big gaming drought until Pikmin. After Pikmin, Wii U owners finally got Wonderful 101, Rayman Legends, Splinter Cell, etc. Many have said that Nintendo has “no games” that isn’t entirely true as of now. Any new console owner should have plenty to play, here are some games that you can only experience on the WiiU.
Critically Acclaimed (over 83 metacritic):
-Rayman Legends (Tablet Support)
-Legend of Zelda: The Windwaker (HD)
-Super Mario Brothers U
-Monster Hunter U
-The Wonderful 101
Games on The Way:
-Super Mario 3D Land
-Super Smash Bros.
This is not a bad prospect for new console owners. But for the console owners who have had the console since launch, it has been a tough year. The selection, until now, has felt drier than the Sahara desert. Up until August, it has been mostly: poor ports, Ubisoft games you could buy elsewhere, and delayed Nintendo games.
3rd Party Support
One word, Abysmal. The Wii U might as well have leprosy. No other company seems to want to touch this console besides Indies, Sega, and Ubisoft. Since the N64, Nintendo has had pretty poor 3rd party support. Until this problem gets fixed, it will never be a main console for most gamers.
I feel like it is the year 2005, whenever I turn on the Wii U. The features are so far behind other consoles (this includes PS3 and Xbox 360). Yea Miiverse is cool, but it isn’t groundbreaking. If I wanted to see fan art of Nintendo characters I would just scroll DevianArt all day. What happened to a proper friend lists, cross-game chat, achievements, and an account system? These are simple features that were standard by 2009 by other competitors. Another problem is online was a big step in 2007, now competitors are trying to figure out how to incorporate the cloud into their future services. Nintendo is still trying to solve a problem that most competitors figured out about 5 years ago. The cloud and other services are going to be a big deal for next gen and Nintendo is still stuck trying to figure out how online works.
Nintendo really has not given me any substantial reason to want to have the Gamepad. It has been about a year since the Wii-U was first released, and Nintendo has not given me a reason to own it. At this point, Nintendo would have been better off spending resources on working on their infrastructure and services instead of the gamepad. Also, Nintendo decided to make another stop gap console that is in between this gen and next gen. Except it started of $100 more than their previous stop gap console.
Nintendo’s management has been a concern of mine for awhile. Here are a few reasons why.
-Nintendo said they didn’t realize high definition visuals would be so difficult even though other companies have been working on HD technology since 2004/2005.
-Nintendo originally said online is not a big deal, and now they are saying cloud is not a big deal.
-They keep delaying games.
-They released a $350 console that is close to the price of a premium next gen console with last gen specs
-They seem to keep following the same plan. Do they know what the definition of insanity is?
There is a new popular show called Sleepy Hallow. In the show, there is a man called Ichabod Crane. Crane was alive during the American Revolution and somehow traveled to the present time. This is humorous because Crane is trying to figure out how to adapt to his new environment. In my opinion, Nintendo seems like Ichabod Crane at times. They see all these improvements that have happened since the SD era and they seem baffled by it. Their consumer base is growing up and they seem oblivious to it. When people pay over $299 for a console, they expect the system to be future proof. I’m concerned Nintendo won’t even keep up with basic functions that were present in 2008.
If someone came up to me and asked if they should buy the Wii U, I would tell them to wait a little while longer. There are some good games now, but I have a feeling there will be another price drop. At $299 the Wii U is still missing key features that should be standard on modern consoles. Two years from now, the Wii U will have mostly Nintendo exclusives only. At $200-250 range, I think the Wii-U will be a great secondary console.
